I have never been filled with such love and light during a film project, as I have with this one. Kelly Cooper is a Las Vegas mother of two, who’s founded a nonprofit here in Las Vegas inspired by her daughter, Gracie. Gracie’s diagnosis of down syndrome was a complete surprise to Kelly and Craig, but they raised Gracie the same way they did their older daughter, Natalie. She grew up in an inclusive environment at home, in school, and in extra curricular activities. When Kelly discovered that this inclusiveness was a rarity for children who are differently abled, she knew that she needed to do something to make inclusion more common.
Gracie’s house is an organization that offers opportunities for people of ALL abilities to come together. They host monthly events such as inclusive cross fit, crafts, classes, support groups, and volunteer opportunities. The idea is for these events to not be just for people with disabilities or for people without disabilities, but rather for people of ALL abilities. Gracie’s House encourages families to get involved and come together for inclusive community events like these.
I had the pleasure of attending one of Kaizen Cross Fit‘s inclusive work outs with the Gracie’s House family. This was a typical Saturday morning cross fit session, and the Gracie’s House crew just joined on in. These kiddos and families lifted my heart so much that day. I witnessed a lot of team work, kids and adults helping each other achieve new goals, and a whole lot of friendship and fun. This is what inclusion fosters, and why the mission of Gracie’s House is so important in our community.
