In May, I had the pleasure of photographing Heidi and her family. Heidi and Kevin were expecting their third baby, a little girl. When we arrived at the park a bouncy, little girl hopped out of their car, and immediately stopped short, giving me stranger-danger looks. But just like the rest of my little subjects that aren’t so sure about new people at first, I slowly won her over. While this was just a mini-session, I knew Grace just needed time to explore and feel me out. We decided to walk a bit at first, letting her play with rocks, goose feathers, and whatever else caught her preschool interest. I told her she could hang on to them for their pictures if she wished. After that, she opened right up and stole the show with her personality. She even told me that her little sister’s name would be Unicorn. Heidi confirmed that this was what Grace had named the baby, but that she did have a name given by her parents too; Nora.
Heidi and I quickly connected, and felt comfortable and friendly. We were both expecting surprise babies, and we had chosen the same midwife for home births. Heidi and Kevin explained that it wasn’t so easy planning for their other children, so the surprise of expecting a third baby without all the difficulty that they faced before was extra sweet. They were quite excited to be planing their home birth for Nora. Shortly after this session, Nora made her way into the world a little early.
