Angelina | High School Senior Session

Equestrian High School Senior Session

High school senior sessions are so much fun to plan. It’s such a unique process for each senior that I work with. Angelina’s mother scheduled three separate shoots for her, to capture everything that she hoped for in her senior photos. When I first spoke with them, equestrian photography and cheer photos were at the top of the wish list. With Angelina’s excellent test in clothes, we fit in a few outfit changes at each of her sessions too.

For the equestrian photos, advance planning and safety was my priority. I knew Angelina would be riding a friends’ horse, so I asked them to be sure that someone familiar with the horse would be there to act as our handler throughout this process. Angelina wanted to wear a gown with a train to romanticize these images. The train took some getting use to for the horse. Thankfully, our team was able to settle him and the resulting images turned out to be everything she dreamed of.

It wouldn’t be a high school senior session without showing off Angelina’s style. She would look absolutely gorgeous in anything, but I think she chose the perfect outfits to change into at the farm. Her white, boho top and skirt was beautiful for this rustic setting, and I think the muted pink bodysuit and skirt complimented her complexion well. With three separate outfits, session one yielded a variety of images to choose from all on its own. But we weren’t finished.

A Senior Session at the Football Field

For session two, I met Angelina and her parents at the football field for cheer photos and some cap and gown poses. It was obvious that she was most comfortable donning a cheer uniform as her personality started to shine here. As a high school senior, cheer will always be at the forefront of her memories, and I’m just so happy we could capture these for her.

For cap and gown photos, Angelina wore a fitted white dress underneath the gown with heals for a gorgeous, feminine look. I loved this little dress on her! We had quite a bit of wind at the end of out football field session, but she kept a smile on her face and embraced the outfit change and extra poses.

High School Senior & Family

For our third and final high school senior session, I met Angelina’s family at a cotton field in Oxford. I will share more of her family photos in another post, but had to include her outfit choices for senior photos here. I really adored the wine crop top with white flare jeans. She ended the night with a lace, teal romper with skirting. I lent her my sweater for a few photos because the air was starting to get chilly by this point. With all of her outfit choices and unique locations, Angelina made it impossibly hard for her momma to choose. I loved everything about working with this gorgeous girlie and her family!

    2023 Fine Art Framing Release

I have been anticipating a pretty big shift in fine art framing and printing from my framers for a while now, and it looks like the time has come. While this has challenged me with plenty to do while integrating new framing product and print options, I really believe the changes coming are going to be a huge blessing to my studio and most importantly to my portrait clients. Until now, I have been sourcing prints from a separate professional print lab, and then shipping to my framers for final production. Dave and Shannon, the amazing humans behind our beautiful framing, just announced that they are ready to handle every step of the process. What they’re offering in fine art printing is a tremendous upgrade!

    Fine Art Prints

Printing portrait art that lasts a lifetime, takes careful consideration of paper types, pigment, and mounting options. Our prints come in four fine-art-rated paper types: luster, matte, linen, and cotton. After being printed with pigment based ink, the prints are then mounted to an acid-free styrene for support and durability. We’ll then have a number of framing, matte, and decorative print edge options to customize your fine art framing to individual preference. You’ll even be able to have your torn-edge, cotton prints edged in golf leaf.

    New Frame Moulding Styles

The 2023 fine art framing release is bringing us several new frame designs, along with the option to add UV-blocking acrylic to your frame. In addition to the authentic reclaimed barn wood frames, there will now be classic oak and maple moulding options. We are also retiring some of the less popular frames and simplifying our menu for customers. What remains is an absolutely exquisite collection of handcrafted frames.

What to Wear to Your Maternity Session

      The Maternity Dress

When clients discuss their maternity session wardrobe with me, the maternity dress is typically the first thing on their mind. Choosing a maternity dress can be tricky. We want you to wear something that makes you feel amazing. As women, we all have areas that we are self conscious about and assets that we like to show off. Keep those features in mind when choosing your maternity dress. For example, I love an off-the-shoulder style that both highlights my shoulders AND hides the underarm area. The location of the maternity session should be considered as well. Choose a color that stands out from the background of your portraits. I do have a collection of maternity dresses in my studio that you may come in and try on before your session. If I don’t have something you love, then I will help you track down the perfect maternity dress.

      Casual Maternity Look

Many of my expecting clients also like to wear a second dress or casual look at their maternity session. I suggest that you select a favorite maternity outfit that you’ve felt really good wearing during your pregnancy. I have a photo of myself in a favorite shirt and jeans during my first pregnancy, and it brings me right back to the work-day belly rubs. I have also had a maternity client bring a few traditional outfits that highlighted her culture and heritage. This brought so much meaning to her maternity portraits, and they all looked really beautiful on her. If you do bring a maternity outfit from your own closet, make sure it’s one that you love to wear and really makes you glow.

      Maternity Body Suit

In the studio, we have the ability to show a bit more of your body and get creative with styling. Maternity body suits are becoming more popular for maternity sessions because they provide some coverage while still showing off your beautiful, pregnant curves. If this is something that you’re interested in wearing for your maternity session, Sew Trendy and AR Backdrops are excellent maternity boutiques to shop. For studio maternity sessions, we’ll discuss creative styling at your consult to make sure that you feel comfortable and beautiful throughout your session.

      Choosing Wardrobe for the Family

Many of my maternity sessions also involve styling family members. Once you have selected your maternity dress, we will create a color pallet from the outfits that you’ve chosen. For family styling I like to mix up patterns and solids. For example, dressing sister in a floral, twirly dress and brother in a complimentary solid helps break up the image. We also want to change up the colors chosen for tops and bottoms. If dad has on jeans, dress brother in a brown or colored bottom that coordinates with our color pallet. Lastly, you will want to dress for the elements and terrain. Choose footwear to suit the outdoor terrain that we’ll encounter, and consider the weather and temperature when choosing wardrobe pieces. It’s better to have a sweater or jacket coordinated ahead of time than a cold, miserable child during your session. I know family outfit selection can be a tricky process, so I provide an online styling service that will show you wardrobe options within your color pallet.

Newborn & Sibling Poses: What To Expect From Your Toddler

Sibling poses are always important to the parents who work with me for newborn photos of their younger children. It’s important to keep an open mind and understand that certain factors can make this part of the session look a little different for each family. I will always do my best to capture these shots though. I know how dear these portraits are as a mother of three.

Age as a Factor in Sibling Poses

Much of our success in capturing sibling poses at your newborn session has to do with age and maturity. Children who are four or more years in age tend to be a little more excited and cooperative when holding or posing with their newborn sibling. Toddlers who are one or two-years-old may have a little bit tougher time processing the transition from baby to big brother or sister. It’s important for us to meet them where they are. This is a big change for your family, and kids need us to understand that. We will usually start with siblings laying on their back, and baby wrapped like a little football for easy, safe handling. However, we will follow their lead and adapt posing to meet the needs of your children.

        Head Swap Sibling Poses

The most common challenge we run into when photographing newborn sibling poses, is getting everyone to look at the camera at the same time. Little kids are wiggly and their attention can be all over the place. Sometimes we can just catch a sweet smooch or in-the-moment shot, and we don’t really need everyone gazing at the camera. But most of the time, because I photograph these shots in a simple and consistent manner, we can just make a head swap in Photoshop to achieve the perfect sibling pose. The little boys below were a lot of fun to photograph, but exactly as busy as you’d expect little boys under the age of five to be. They were excited to be there and happy to participate, but flashed those fantastic smiles in opposite shots. No big deal. This was an easy head swap, and mom LOVED the final image!

Posing Toddler Siblings Separate from Newborn

Sometimes, we have to get a little more creative with sibling poses. Toddlers that are one or two-years-old may not want to be near their baby brother or sister for a while. Remember, it is a big change for the baby of the family to become … not the baby. I had taken maternity photos for the family below, so I already knew that they had a younger toddler. I had my usual set up prepared, but I also had a bucket set up and toy cars handy in case we needed a plan B. Guess what? We really needed that plan B. This poor little guy wanted nothing to do with having a baby brother yet, and I love his parents for being so understanding during our session. We all just offered him lots of love. We took breaks. And we tried again with a different approach. In the end, the bucket magic is what won us a sibling pose. We posed baby brother in a bucket while bub took a break. Then I let his brothers play with toy cars and sit next to the empty bucket. Baby was safe, and mom got that sweet sibling photo!

Dornzedla | Elf Cake Smash Session

Dornzelda is already 6-years-old this December, but I thought that this cake smash session was due for a repost just in time to spread Christmas cheer. Her mother, Della, came to me with the idea to celebrate her first birthday with an Elf themed spaghetti smash. Dornzelda is a December baby. Her newborn photos were Christmas themed, and her mother wanted to stay with the holiday theme. Dornzelda’s father, Richard, was stationed abroad at the time and was really missing his baby girl. Della, wanted to surprise him with a special Christmas card and birthday photoshoot. Since he loves the movie, Elf, she asked me to plan a Buddy the Elf spaghetti smash session for Dornzelda. Y’all, I was jumping up and down when she made this request. Really?! Seriously?!?! I LOVE Christmas and “smiling’s my favorite!” I’m in!

Buddy the Elf | Spaghetti Smash Session | Cake Smash Photography

We didn’t want Dornzelda’s outfit to look like your everyday Halloween variety costume, so instead of scouring the internet I went to a trusted felt artist, Julie Bourdages. She is the creative behind The Felted Attic Prop Shop. I knew that Julie would take the vision that we had, and create a quality baby costume with all of the details. She did it! Right down to the embroidered trim, Dornzelda’s outfit looked exactly like Buddy the Elf’s.

Dornzelda was completely up for this whole idea too. Spaghetti is one of her favorite things to eat, and she dove right in. I’d say she had advanced noodle slurping skills for an 11-month-old. After getting her started, we added a couple of Buddy’s favorites, sprinkles and marshmallows. The marshmallows were also a hit, and had Dornzelda blissfully enjoying her first sugar fix.

Since we wanted to wait for Richard to receive his Christmas card first, Della and I held onto this secret smash session for a few months. It was completely worth the wait to send a special surprise. You can see Richard’s response in the video below, and it’s clear that this little girl put a smile on his face.

Family Heirlooms as Newborn Photography Props

When clients ask me what props to bring to their newborn session, I typically tell them that they do not need to bring anything except what they need to care for their infant. Every prop, outfit, headband, or other styling piece is provided. I have a particular esthetic to my newborn photography, and have all of the items that we need to create artful newborn portraits. The exception to that, is when parents wish to include a special item or family heirlooms in their photoshoot. These types of props add meaningful details to your portraits.

Now, you might be wondering what is considered a family heirloom. If the article you’d like to bring to your session has been in the family for generations, tells a special story about your family or baby, is an iconic piece of your family’s culture, or symbolizes something important about you or your child, that item adds meaning to your portraits. If it was simply a baby shower gift, such as a crochet costume or hat, and you just want to include it because you feel obligated to Aunt Jane, leave it at home. You can always snap some cute cell phone photos of that outfit to show how grateful you are to the gift giver. But more often than not, those treasured outfits are a little too big for baby when you come in for the newborn session, and aren’t ideal for the process of creating timeless newborn portraits.

I have had clients bring in really neat family heirlooms over my many years in newborn photography work, that have added wonderful detail to their newborn portraits. A few have even brought something along to a family portrait session. To help you formulate a concept of what personal props add meaning to a session, I’ve compiled a few of my favorite client-provided props. These family heirlooms add extra special meaning to their baby’s newborn photography, and aren’t overly distracting from our star, the baby. And because they fit nicely into my style of newborn photography, the resulting portraits are beautiful works of art to be treasured by their family.

Cotton Field Photos | North East Family Photography

Much like my own family, the Chansons moved to Mississippi recently, and were excited to capture cotton field photos with me this Fall. It seems to be the thing to do around here during this season. I love the view from the roadsides as the cotton climbs to the top and coats the landscape in white. It was certainly a pretty location for the Chansons to have their family photos taken, and on this particular evening the field was washed in the most perfect, golden light.

Cotton Field Photos | North East Family Photography

I love photographing families outdoors, because children have space to move and play. As the evening progressed, these little girls became more and more comfortable with me, and their smiles grew more authentic and bright. I got to see their silly moods and more cuddly, quiet moments as bedtimes approached. It was such a playful family session. I think the Chanson family knocked cotton field photos out of the park.

Movement Friendly Family Photography | My Approach to Photographing Families

Every photographer has a their own approach to family photography, but my regular clients will agree that mine is very relaxed and friendly. I don’t want parents to stress and I want kids to feel comfortable, so most of the time we will head outdoors for your family photoshoot. Outside, young children have room to explore and move their bodies the way that children do. And let me be clear, I fully expect kids to show their need for movement. I think the whole family breaths a little more freely and settles into natural smiles a bit more easily when we’re all outside.

Movement Friendly Family Photography | My Approach to Photographing Families | Boys Find Grasshopper
A family catches grasshoppers during their family photoshoot with Sarah Beth Chamberlain.

My family portrait sessions involve some posing and also candid interaction. I want you to look your best, so I will direct you into a flattering position. But what makes a photograph truly unique is you! I often pose parents and children cuddled close together, so that it’s hard not to see that connection. Momma, you look stunning when you are smiling at your babies! The guys relax and show their natural smiles when they gaze upon their beautiful wife. Seriously, your best selves come out when you’re with the ones you love! My goal is to capture that bit of magic between you, and produce portraits that show who you are as a family.

Movement Friendly Family Photography | My Approach to Photographing Families
This family took a nature walk as I captured a cuddle from afar.

Many parents are worried about their child’s behavior when they are out for a family photoshoot with me, but often the behavior they’re so stressed about is not even misbehavior. Be careful not to overly reprimand kids for exploring or being a little silly during our session. This zaps the joy out of the day, and it can really take a while to regain comfort. Yes, of course, we want them to be safe while exploring the outdoors during our portrait session. So if something is going in an unsafe direction we will stop and redirect. We’ll put a stop to rude or mean behavior as well. But my philosophy on kids is that movement and activity are NOT misbehavior. In fact, movement is a dire need for young children. If your kiddos need to move, we will have a movement break and take some action shots. If they are being silly with you, GO WITH IT! Most of the time that is when their personality shows, and those moments result in photos that you will fall in love with. Trust me, I’ve heard my fair share of potty humor jokes over my many years of photographing families (and raising my own children). I will take those genuine laughs and smiles over forced grins any day. I expect your children to act like children, so don’t stress too much over that. Come as your true selves. That’s who I’m excited to meet!

Nora | Outdoor Cake Smash & Family Session

Outdoor Cake Smash | Family Photography | Northeast Mississippi Family Photographer | Strawberry Shortcake Cake Smash

I was so thrilled when Nora’s mom chose an outdoor cake smash for her baby’s first birthday! She had the strawberry shortcake theme picked out for quite some time, so a glowy, sunset shoot outdoors brought the perfect golden hour warmth to this summery theme. Nora is one of my grow-with-me-babies, and I had been taking her pictures since she was in her mother’s belly. She wasn’t sure what to think of the cake at first, but eventually she warmed up and dug in.

Nora is a nursing baby, so she needed a milk break after cake. Heidi asked to have a few photos captured of their special bond. As a nursing momma, I completely understand. I will always capture these moments for my clients, because this stage only lasts so long.

Outdoor Cake Smash | Family Photography | Northeast Mississippi Family Photographer | Strawberry Shortcake Cake Smash

One of the best reasons to do an outdoor cake smash instead of a studio portrait session, is that it’s super simple to include family portraits. If you’re taking the time to have professional portraits created, why not update your family photos as well? By the point Nora’s whole family was pretty comfortable with me, since we’d gotten together a few times in her first year. The giggles and family connection were awesome, and I think these are my favorite pictures of their family. So warm, and so sweet.

                    Jayden | Gold Hope Session

Jayden’s mother, Nicole, requested a session with me a few months ago through The Gold Hope Project. Jayden was diagnosed last September with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, after a trip to the pediatrician and ultimately the emergency room with some bruising and petechiae. Nicole thought she was getting Jayden checked out for anemia, which runs in the family, but was heartbroken to discover that Jayden was fighting a much more difficult battle.

Before his diagnosis, Jayden enjoyed riding dirt bikes and being outside. In his current condition, outside time is limited due to germs and it is not possible for him to ride his dirt bike. Nicole says that they noticed limitations in Jayden’s mobility right away. He was feeling weak and no longer able to run around the way he had before. As we walked through the park for their family portrait session, Jayden told me about his dirt bike and how he wishes he could ride. He really enjoyed being at the park that day, and seeing all the animals that were there. He really showed his personality for pictures. Jayden has so much spunk.

Nicole says that Jayden’s diagnosis and challenges that have come after have really made their family appreciate time together more. She says they are just able to enjoy simple moments like snuggling and watching movies, eating a meal together, or watching the boys play. These everyday moments are all the more special.

When Nicole first told me what she was hoping to capture during this session, her focus was on Jayden and his brother Logan. “We just need one or two family shots,” she said at the beginning of the session. I knew that their family needed more than a couple of family photos from this special fighter session. So during the first half of their session, I took plenty of pictures of Jayden with Logan, wearing their Golden Knights jerseys and posing like tough, James-Bond-like fellas. However, when we moved to our last location in the park, I sat them all down for family cuddles. I asked Nicole to wrap her arms around Jayden and just be. This next image was the result, and was my favorite image from the whole shoot. It just encompasses everything that Nicole had told me about how much she appreciated moments together during this time in their lives. I’m so honored that she allowed me to capture these tender moments for their family.
