We’ve only moved into our home in Alaska a little over a week ago, and I’ve been out light-chasing twice. The night before this, I did my very best to make sure my dad saw the aurora before his flight home. However, it was a heavily cloudy night, and we were given a small window as the lights were dimming around 3AM. On my way home from the airport on the following evening I noted that the skies were clearing despite another cloudy forecast. When I checked the KP levels and ovation maps, it was clear that we were in for an early show. A great night to take the kids out with me.

Anytime I take the family out light chasing with me, I’m pretty much agreeing to go home early. The kids don’t have the patience to stick it out for hours like grownup light-chasers. My husband prefers a clear, early light show as well. This was the perfect night to see the Aurora Borealis as a family though, because we just had to wait for it to get dark. Aurora reports were coming in from as far south as Missouri, and activity level was still high. I gathered all of their warm layers, snacks, and waters before it got dark, and we left the house before true darkness settled in. When darkness fell and the lights began their dance, we were parked at a lake with nobody else around.

By 12AM the word had gotten out that the lights were dancing, and a steady stream of cars began pulling into the parking area or driving about looking for the lights. They were still dancing, but dimmer than we had witnessed earlier in the evening. My kids were letting me know that they were ready to go home. The littlest had already fallen asleep in his carseat. Since we’d already seen a beautiful performance and they’d had enough, we turned in for the night.
