Never in my life did I imagine that I’d have the chance to photograph a Grand Canyon proposal. While camping with some of our friends for Labor Day weekend, the opportunity presented itself. My friend’s brother, Josh, was planning to propose at sunset but needed a diversion so that Lauren didn’t suspect. With his permission, I volunteered to be the deceiver AND photographer for this event. I appeared in their travel trailer and said, “Hey, my hubby is offering me a kid free night to go photograph the sunset over the canyon. Who’s in?” My bestie just feigned exhaustion, the rest looked between us and played along, and it ended up being just me, Josh and Lauren.
We drove out to Moran Point, a spot known for quieter sunset viewing. There were a number of cars there, but it wasn’t as busy the visitor center area with ranger programs going on. As we walked out to the rim and Josh silently looked for a good spot to propose, Lauren took off down a little path and went exploring. Josh had no choice but to follow. I just observed from afar while she took her own photos of the breathtaking scenery and waited for the moment. Then Josh got down on one knee.
The small gathering of people behind us cheered, excited to witness a Grand Canyon proposal during their evening walk. I managed to have another observer record a cellphone video too. Once Lauren and Josh wandered back to our platform, I captured joyful engagement photos of the couple. It was such a blessing to be able to play a part in their big moment. They were thrilled that I could be there and capture these.
